We’re so used to poker events having a guaranteed prize pool that we seldom give it much thought, but for tournament organizers and hosts, it’s a major concern. Therefore, it must be much more enjoyable when the guarantee for a major event is not only adequately covered, but even substantially so.
The success of the latest PokerStars Road to PSPC Philadelphia tournament was identical. The event, which initially guaranteed a prize pool of $200,000, attracted an astounding 1,598 entrants, surpassing the guarantee to the point that the prize pool ballooned to an incredible $487,390!
In addition to the cash prize, the players were competing for a coveted Platinum Pass to the January PokerStars Players No-Limit Hold’em Championship (PSPC) in the Bahamas (see below). Vladimir Grechnikov, a New Jersey resident, was the big winner on this specific leg of the Road to PSPC, adding the Platinum Pass package to the $60,000 grand prize!

Being a deep-sea fisherman is one of the most daring occupations imaginable, so it’s natural that Vladimir, age 34, advanced farther in the competition than all of his competitors. In his own words: “Incredible dude, I am dumbfounded; this is a dream come true.” Vladimir’s path to poker success is remarkable and undoubtedly resonates: “After seeing my friend’s father leave his job and begin playing professionally, I picked up a few books, played a few minor events in basements, began playing online poker, and took it from there.” The nice thing about poker is that it is the ultimate game for the common man and woman.
For those of you seeking greatness (or just a terrific poker luxury vacation in the sun), the next destination on the Road to PSPC is Pittsburgh Live! (beginning October 27), where another Platinum Pass will be given in addition to heaps of money.
